Christopher Columbus

Christopher Columbus (1985)
At Columbus’ time, navigation was still unfit for ocean-crossing: the ships were small, and could not carry enough food and fresh water for such a journey onto the uncharted ocean. In those days, most European navigators considered crossing the Atlantic unfeasible; furthermore, Columbus underestimated the size of the Earth, and overestimated the size of the Eurasian landmass. To add one more layer of danger to this cake of potential disasters, Columbus departed during hurricane season.

Columbus was an ambitious man, and he really hoped to find riches and fame when he made predictions of the route west to Asia. He was so sure of his plan that he lobbied seven years successively in the royal courts of Portugal, Spain and other European kingdoms until he reached his goal. Moreover, he was venturesome and optimistic in the face of many dangers on the Atlantic mentioned above. These actions showed Columbus’ true character as a daring person who was willing to take risks for his own purposes.

Since the ocean was very dangerous, the King and the Queen of Spain must have been very desperate to allow Columbus to go into this unknown and hope to find riches. Indeed, after the costly war between the Spanish and the Moors, these two highnesses needed an alternative route to Asia, and a competitive edge against Portugal (whose explorers had successfully sailed around the southern tip of Africa, opening an eastern sea route to Asia) and the rest of Europe. Because Columbus promised such an advantage of finding another route to trade with the Indies, the King and the Queen had to consider his idea, however improbable it was. In order to keep Columbus from taking his ideas elsewhere, the King and the Queen gave him a large amount of annual salary with free food and lodging, and eventually accepted his proposal. This showed that those three characters were actually so alike, ambitious and venturesome, which made this unprecedented voyage possible.

The seaway to Asia was very chancy, since there were risks of drowning in the huge waves, and exhausting all the food and clean water before reaching the land. In addition, Columbus’ inaccurate calculations would spark doubt among his crew. All these odds were stacked up against Columbus, and his chances of success were very low. It was through a combination of undying determination and luck that he got the loyalty of his men and “Found the New World”.

The Natives were portrayed accurately in this movie. In real life, they were very friendly at contact with Columbus, and somewhat worshipped him, as in the movie. Besides, the relationships between the Natives and Columbus deteriorated since the second voyage, as in the movie.

Columbus was portrayed as a noble, heroic figure in the movie, which was not historically accurate. In real life, during the second voyage, Columbus enslaved the entire village’s inhabitants, and forced them to give him gold/cotton or die. This was obviously missing from the movie, in which he only punished the village chief. Other than this aspect, Columbus was portrayed as an ambitious and daring navigator, which was mostly accurate.

In this movie, there were many noteworthy features as well as flaws. The acting of the characters was good, especially that of Queen Isabella, who was played by Faye Dunaway. She was very convincing in how she spoke to Columbus, and was good at showing her different emotions.

Queen Isabella

The costumes, together with the setting and the scenery, were great: they gave the feeling of an era distant from ours, yet so vivid. The music fit the scenes and ambience. The directing, the characters, and the story mostly fit historical facts. However, the storyline was slow, and the character of Columbus was played more prudent and serious than he was supposed to be.

The plot of the movie followed closely to the actual historical events, but with some differences: The movie mostly showed that the reason for the King and the Queen to accept Columbus’ proposal was for the good of Christendom; nevertheless—the moviemakers might have just downplayed it—the main reason was that Spain wanted a competitive edge over other European kingdoms in the trade with the Indies.

Columbus and Queen

For example, in the movie, Isabella was impressed by Columbus’ devotion to the “True Faith”, and was won over by his god-fearing aura. Nonetheless, in reality, she turned down his offer while the King Ferdinand intervened. Additionally, in real life, Columbus enslaved the entire island’s inhabitants and forced them to pay tribute or risk death. In the movie, however, Columbus was given a reasonable and even honourable personality; he tried to understand the Natives, and became saddened by the death of his Native friends.

After all, this movie was not a documentary but a Hollywood drama; however, it was with accuracy and skills that made it one of the best historical movies that successfully portrayed Columbus in Hollywood style.

The Favourite Game

“The Favourite Game”, also called “Le jeu de l’ange”, is a Canadian film. The plot setting of “The Favourite game” begins with this piece of pure whiteness in a park of Montréal and also ends there:

The favourite Game Setting

The story is about Leo’s relationship with two women Shell and Lisa. In real life, Leo is deeply being in love with Shell. I captured a couple of fantastic scenes of them:

When they fell in love, their image in the moon was absolutely beautiful and I captured the moments when the night was approaching to them and they were gradually merged into the moon:

Moon

Moon 2

Moon 3

This sunset image is also almost perfect:

Sunset

When they separated, Shell’s sadness was artfully expressed through the car mirror:

Sad

Sad 2

Sad 3

Sad 4

Here comes Leo’s “true love” in his childhood memory:

“Lisa the child had evaded me and was still perfect, suddenly making all other women less perfect. They were still beautiful, but somehow less crucial.”

“Lisa the child, that perfection remained, preserving the past. Everything could be preserved forever, like my connection to Shell, and in that moment, I remembered.”

The Favourite Game Lisa The Favourite Game Lisa 2 The Favourite Game Lisa 3 The Favourite Game Lisa 4 The Favourite Game Lisa 5

“I remember flying over the snow and landing. And then I carefully stood up to look behind me at a perfect imprint, both human and angelic, in the perfect whiteness behind me, and that, that was the favourite game.”

The Favourite Game

A perfect novelist and a perfect director made this film perfect in their sense of being perfect.

True love is pure and perfect and it is a series of perfect moments in your memories, especially the childhood memory, almost angelic, the pure perfect whiteness.

I think that the film should be called “The angelic game” to match “Le jeu de l’ange”.

“The Favourite Game” was adapted from the novel of the same title. The author of the novel is the Canadian singer-songwriter, musician, poet and novelist Leonard Cohen. The protagonist of the novel is also called “Leo” and it’s an autobiographical novel.

Leonard Cohen

Leonard Cohen is a typical idealist, a hopeless romantic perfectionist. Only a perfect childhood memory meets his sense of “true love”, which is non-existent in real life.

He’s after all a prince charming with a charm that doesn’t grow old with age. He’s featured in a new Sony commercial “2 Worlds” in which he recites a specially written verse called “That’s What I Heard You Say”.

Leonard Cohen – A thousand kisses deep

(Spoken Poem)

Don’t matter if the road is long
Don’t matter if it’s steep
Don’t matter if the moon is gone
And the darkness is complete
Don’t matter if we lose our way
It’s written that we’ll meet
At least, that’s what I heard you say
A thousand kisses deep

I loved you when you opened
Like a lily to the heat
You see, I’m just another snowman
Standing in the rain and sleet
Who loved you with his frozen love
His second hand physique
With all he is and all he was
A thousand kisses deep

I know you had to lie to me
I know you had to cheat
You learned it on your father’s knee
And at your mother’s feet
But did you have to fight your way
Across the burning street
When all our vital interests lay
A thousand kisses deep

I’m turning tricks
I’m getting fixed
I’m back on boogie street
I’d like to quit the business
But I’m in it, so to speak
The thought of you is peaceful
And the file on you complete
Except what I forgot to do
A thousand kisses deep

Don’t matter if you’re rich and strong
Don’t matter if you’re weak
Don’t matter if you write a song
The nightingales repeat
Don’t matter if it’s nine to five
Or timeless and unique
You ditch your life to stay alive
A thousand kisses deep

The ponies run
The girls are young
The odds are there to beat
You win a while, and then it’s done
Your little winning streak
And summon now to deal with your invincible defeat
You live your life as if it’s real
A thousand kisses deep

I hear their voices in the wine
That sometimes did me seek
The band is playing Auld Lang Syne
But the heart will not retreat
There’s no forsaking what you love
No existential leap
As witnessed here in time and blood
A thousand kisses deep

Femme Fatale

The best part of the film, for me, is neither the strong sexuality nor the gold and diamond snake design (although they are the indiscerptible part of the film and they are undeniably subtle)

Eroticism

Diamond

rather, the end of the story, the tagline below:

“When you’re on the road……your little girl will always be with you.”

When you understand both English and French, this film is pleasingly tailored for you.

“Quand vous êtres sur la route……votre petite fille sera toujours près de vous.”

Petite Fille

This necklace changed future.

In the end, the story reminds you of the beginning, a TV show. It asks, “If you could see the future in a crystal ball……or in the palm of your hand, or in a dream……would you change it?”

The story is then perfect.

Laure (Rebecca Romijn) was given a second chance, but it’s not a right future; when she woke up from her dream, she didn’t take the chance people would mostly take, simply because this wonderful life wouldn’t belong to her and this choice made all the difference.

Rebecca Romijn’s skill is amazing. A woman can have so many different faces in one film:

Rebecca Romijn

Lily

Bad Girl

Dream

So if you could see your future, would you change it; or if you could see your future years ago, would you have changed it?

The Lake House

Girl: “There’s always something better coming around the corner”
Kate: “But if she’s not careful, she could spend her whole life waiting

This is the dialog between Kate and a little girl. It’s the first time the film mentions about “Waiting”. “Waiting” is about “Time”. The filmmaker is imaginative and creative. The story happened at a beautiful lake house where time stood still and a mailbox became a time machine connected with future, where Kate lives 2 years ahead apart from Alex.

Their first “date” is that Alex’s taking Kate on walks of his favorite places of Chicago one Saturday morning by sending her a personalized map. Kate wishes they could have done this walk together. He leaves her a loving message on a brick wall at the end written “Kate, I am here with you. Thanks for the lovely Saturday together”.

Saturday

Together

The close-up “Together” makes this love walk so warm.

As Alex said, “We’ll be together in time even if we’re far apart. I’ll find a way to be close to you.” he’s attempted to be close to her in many ways. The way they communicate reminds me of long distance or online dating, however, they appear to be so natural and pure. As Kate said, “The one man I can never met him, I would like to give my whole heart to.”

Kate’s favorite novel “Persuasion” also talks about “Waiting“. “These two people, they meet, they almost fall in love, but the timing isn’t right. They have to part and then years later, they meet again. They get another chance. You know, but they don’t know if too much time has passed, if they wait too long, if it’s, you know, too late to make it work.”

Not only Alex’s attempted to be close to Kate, Kate too. Crisis enters Alex’s life when his father has a heart attack and shortly thereafter dies. She rushes to the mailbox and as a gift to Alex, she places a book in the mailbox, which she says is a tribute to his father, a book that is not yet published in Alex’s time. “I wish somehow I could be there with you that we could sit together and look out over the water and the light in this house your father built. I could be a shoulder for you like you’ve been for me. And tell you that everything is gonna be Okay.”

Determined to bridge the distance between them at last, they tempt fate by arranging to meet. Alex makes a reservation in 2004 for a date in 2006 at Il Mare, a fancy restaurant, but only Kate appears. Alex does not show up. The next day Kate writes Alex a letter telling Alex of this fact, but he doesn’t understand. “Something must have happened” he responds. Kate retreats, believing she will never have happiness. She urges Alex to move on.

“A man was killed right in front of me. He died in my arms. And I thought, ‘It can’t end just like that on Valentine’s Day.’ I thought about all the people who love him, waiting at home, who will never see him again, and then I thought ‘What if there’s no one? What if you live your whole life and no one is waiting?’ So I drove to the lake house looking for any kind of answer. And I found you. And let myself get lost, lost in the beautiful fantasy where time stood still. But it’s not real, Alex. I have to learn to live the life that I have got.”

On Valentines Day 2008, Kate goes to Visionary Vanguard Associates, an upcoming architects office, to talk about renovations to her apartment, but does not realise it is run by Alex’s brother Harry. Kate notices a beautiful watercolour of the Lake House and asks who did it. Harry says it was done by Alex Wyler, his brother, but tells her he passed away 2 years ago to the day. Kate realises something and races to the mailbox by the Lake House, placing a letter inside. Alex was the man that died that day, two years previously, and she tells him to wait 2 years, not to look for her or try to find her. Kate knows that Alex can’t change her reality what has happened in Kate’s reality has happened. In order for Kate’s and Alex’s reality to merge, Alex must meet Kate at the Lake House on February 14th 2008.

Kate

“It’s taken me all this time to say it, but I love you. If you still care for me, wait for me, wait with me, just wait.”

In 2008, the Mail Box Flag drops and Kate, previously sobbing on the ground, watches it in earnest, and behind her a truck pulls up. Out steps Alex. They share their second passionate embrace and after several minutes walk arm in arm into the Lake House.

Life is 3D + Time = 4D, so is love. Timing requires patience. True love is not emotional or impulsive, but natural and pure, with patience. Natural and Pure, that’s what the Lake House touches me. Time understands love.

Face

Face

I really don’t understand Tsai Ming-liang’s “Face” (Visage). It’s not appropriate to describe it as long and tedious after all, since at least I practiced French listening, and it did bring the visual and audio enjoyment to the audience.

For me, to review a film is equal to review the character of the director. The trailer made the film very attractive and perfect, but I found that a trailer is able to delude audience, since the best part of the film is concentrated in a very short trailer, and when watched the long film, I realized that the best part was in the trailer and that’s all. I wanted to appreciate it as a music or dance opera when I read the introduction, however, the music and dance were also only the fragments.

I can only say that “Face” is a true portrayal of Tsai Ming-liang, grandstanding and pursuing difference. Even he did not know what he wanted to convey, but it’s not within the scope of his consideration. The similarity between Hollywood and Tsai Ming-liang is the pursuit of sensual enjoyment, but his failure is at the same time associating with the French. How can France and Hollywood be mixed together? And how can Tsai Ming-liang be as deep as French? Some people deliberately try to look deep like a trailer as to delude people, but if you hope to feel their depth, you will just be disappointed like this.
