The Favourite Game

“The Favourite Game”, also called “Le jeu de l’ange”, is a Canadian film. The plot setting of “The Favourite game” begins with this piece of pure whiteness in a park of Montréal and also ends there:

The favourite Game Setting

The story is about Leo’s relationship with two women Shell and Lisa. In real life, Leo is deeply being in love with Shell. I captured a couple of fantastic scenes of them:

When they fell in love, their image in the moon was absolutely beautiful and I captured the moments when the night was approaching to them and they were gradually merged into the moon:

Moon 2

Moon 3

This sunset image is also almost perfect:

When they separated, Shell’s sadness was artfully expressed through the car mirror:

Sad 2

Sad 3

Sad 4

Here comes Leo’s “true love” in his childhood memory:

“Lisa the child had evaded me and was still perfect, suddenly making all other women less perfect. They were still beautiful, but somehow less crucial.”

“Lisa the child, that perfection remained, preserving the past. Everything could be preserved forever, like my connection to Shell, and in that moment, I remembered.”

“I remember flying over the snow and landing. And then I carefully stood up to look behind me at a perfect imprint, both human and angelic, in the perfect whiteness behind me, and that, that was the favourite game.”

The Favourite Game

A perfect novelist and a perfect director made this film perfect in their sense of being perfect.

True love is pure and perfect and it is a series of perfect moments in your memories, especially the childhood memory, almost angelic, the pure perfect whiteness.

I think that the film should be called “The angelic game” to match “Le jeu de l’ange”.

“The Favourite Game” was adapted from the novel of the same title. The author of the novel is the Canadian singer-songwriter, musician, poet and novelist Leonard Cohen. The protagonist of the novel is also called “Leo” and it’s an autobiographical novel.

Leonard Cohen

Leonard Cohen is a typical idealist, a hopeless romantic perfectionist. Only a perfect childhood memory meets his sense of “true love”, which is non-existent in real life.

He’s after all a prince charming with a charm that doesn’t grow old with age. He’s featured in a new Sony commercial “2 Worlds” in which he recites a specially written verse called “That’s What I Heard You Say”.

Leonard Cohen – A thousand kisses deep

(Spoken Poem)

Don’t matter if the road is long
Don’t matter if it’s steep
Don’t matter if the moon is gone
And the darkness is complete
Don’t matter if we lose our way
It’s written that we’ll meet
At least, that’s what I heard you say
A thousand kisses deep

I loved you when you opened
Like a lily to the heat
You see, I’m just another snowman
Standing in the rain and sleet
Who loved you with his frozen love
His second hand physique
With all he is and all he was
A thousand kisses deep

I know you had to lie to me
I know you had to cheat
You learned it on your father’s knee
And at your mother’s feet
But did you have to fight your way
Across the burning street
When all our vital interests lay
A thousand kisses deep

I’m turning tricks
I’m getting fixed
I’m back on boogie street
I’d like to quit the business
But I’m in it, so to speak
The thought of you is peaceful
And the file on you complete
Except what I forgot to do
A thousand kisses deep

Don’t matter if you’re rich and strong
Don’t matter if you’re weak
Don’t matter if you write a song
The nightingales repeat
Don’t matter if it’s nine to five
Or timeless and unique
You ditch your life to stay alive
A thousand kisses deep

The ponies run
The girls are young
The odds are there to beat
You win a while, and then it’s done
Your little winning streak
And summon now to deal with your invincible defeat
You live your life as if it’s real
A thousand kisses deep

I hear their voices in the wine
That sometimes did me seek
The band is playing Auld Lang Syne
But the heart will not retreat
There’s no forsaking what you love
No existential leap
As witnessed here in time and blood
A thousand kisses deep

Femme Fatale

The best part of the film, for me, is neither the strong sexuality nor the gold and diamond snake design (although they are the indiscerptible part of the film and they are undeniably subtle)

Eroticism

Diamond

rather, the end of the story, the tagline below:

“When you’re on the road……your little girl will always be with you.”

When you understand both English and French, this film is pleasingly tailored for you.

“Quand vous êtres sur la route……votre petite fille sera toujours près de vous.”

Petite Fille

This necklace changed future.

In the end, the story reminds you of the beginning, a TV show. It asks, “If you could see the future in a crystal ball……or in the palm of your hand, or in a dream……would you change it?”

The story is then perfect.

Laure (Rebecca Romijn) was given a second chance, but it’s not a right future; when she woke up from her dream, she didn’t take the chance people would mostly take, simply because this wonderful life wouldn’t belong to her and this choice made all the difference.

Rebecca Romijn’s skill is amazing. A woman can have so many different faces in one film:

Rebecca Romijn

Lily

Bad Girl

Dream

So if you could see your future, would you change it; or if you could see your future years ago, would you have changed it?

The Lake House

Girl: “There’s always something better coming around the corner”
Kate: “But if she’s not careful, she could spend her whole life waiting

This is the dialog between Kate and a little girl. It’s the first time the film mentions about “Waiting”. “Waiting” is about “Time”. The filmmaker is imaginative and creative. The story happened at a beautiful lake house where time stood still and a mailbox became a time machine connected with future, where Kate lives 2 years ahead apart from Alex.

Their first “date” is that Alex’s taking Kate on walks of his favorite places of Chicago one Saturday morning by sending her a personalized map. Kate wishes they could have done this walk together. He leaves her a loving message on a brick wall at the end written “Kate, I am here with you. Thanks for the lovely Saturday together”.

Saturday

Together

The close-up “Together” makes this love walk so warm.

As Alex said, “We’ll be together in time even if we’re far apart. I’ll find a way to be close to you.” he’s attempted to be close to her in many ways. The way they communicate reminds me of long distance or online dating, however, they appear to be so natural and pure. As Kate said, “The one man I can never met him, I would like to give my whole heart to.”

Kate’s favorite novel “Persuasion” also talks about “Waiting“. “These two people, they meet, they almost fall in love, but the timing isn’t right. They have to part and then years later, they meet again. They get another chance. You know, but they don’t know if too much time has passed, if they wait too long, if it’s, you know, too late to make it work.”

Not only Alex’s attempted to be close to Kate, Kate too. Crisis enters Alex’s life when his father has a heart attack and shortly thereafter dies. She rushes to the mailbox and as a gift to Alex, she places a book in the mailbox, which she says is a tribute to his father, a book that is not yet published in Alex’s time. “I wish somehow I could be there with you that we could sit together and look out over the water and the light in this house your father built. I could be a shoulder for you like you’ve been for me. And tell you that everything is gonna be Okay.”

Determined to bridge the distance between them at last, they tempt fate by arranging to meet. Alex makes a reservation in 2004 for a date in 2006 at Il Mare, a fancy restaurant, but only Kate appears. Alex does not show up. The next day Kate writes Alex a letter telling Alex of this fact, but he doesn’t understand. “Something must have happened” he responds. Kate retreats, believing she will never have happiness. She urges Alex to move on.

“A man was killed right in front of me. He died in my arms. And I thought, ‘It can’t end just like that on Valentine’s Day.’ I thought about all the people who love him, waiting at home, who will never see him again, and then I thought ‘What if there’s no one? What if you live your whole life and no one is waiting?’ So I drove to the lake house looking for any kind of answer. And I found you. And let myself get lost, lost in the beautiful fantasy where time stood still. But it’s not real, Alex. I have to learn to live the life that I have got.”

On Valentines Day 2008, Kate goes to Visionary Vanguard Associates, an upcoming architects office, to talk about renovations to her apartment, but does not realise it is run by Alex’s brother Harry. Kate notices a beautiful watercolour of the Lake House and asks who did it. Harry says it was done by Alex Wyler, his brother, but tells her he passed away 2 years ago to the day. Kate realises something and races to the mailbox by the Lake House, placing a letter inside. Alex was the man that died that day, two years previously, and she tells him to wait 2 years, not to look for her or try to find her. Kate knows that Alex can’t change her reality what has happened in Kate’s reality has happened. In order for Kate’s and Alex’s reality to merge, Alex must meet Kate at the Lake House on February 14th 2008.

Kate

“It’s taken me all this time to say it, but I love you. If you still care for me, wait for me, wait with me, just wait.”

In 2008, the Mail Box Flag drops and Kate, previously sobbing on the ground, watches it in earnest, and behind her a truck pulls up. Out steps Alex. They share their second passionate embrace and after several minutes walk arm in arm into the Lake House.

Life is 3D + Time = 4D, so is love. Timing requires patience. True love is not emotional or impulsive, but natural and pure, with patience. Natural and Pure, that’s what the Lake House touches me. Time understands love.

Face

Face

I really don’t understand Tsai Ming-liang’s “Face” (Visage). It’s not appropriate to describe it as long and tedious after all, since at least I practiced French listening, and it did bring the visual and audio enjoyment to the audience.

For me, to review a film is equal to review the character of the director. The trailer made the film very attractive and perfect, but I found that a trailer is able to delude audience, since the best part of the film is concentrated in a very short trailer, and when watched the long film, I realized that the best part was in the trailer and that’s all. I wanted to appreciate it as a music or dance opera when I read the introduction, however, the music and dance were also only the fragments.

I can only say that “Face” is a true portrayal of Tsai Ming-liang, grandstanding and pursuing difference. Even he did not know what he wanted to convey, but it’s not within the scope of his consideration. The similarity between Hollywood and Tsai Ming-liang is the pursuit of sensual enjoyment, but his failure is at the same time associating with the French. How can France and Hollywood be mixed together? And how can Tsai Ming-liang be as deep as French? Some people deliberately try to look deep like a trailer as to delude people, but if you hope to feel their depth, you will just be disappointed like this.

Knowing

Knowing was advertised as a science fiction film, but turned out to be horrifying when I was watching it. When the 911 number combinations were appearing in front of me I realized this was a disaster film.

When the more and more disaster films come out, they cannot help the lack of new ideas, but this film was well developed, to puzzle the audience with a sci-fi one. Nicholas Cage played the leading man, MIT’s teacher. Having visited Boston, I’m very familiar with the background, where the disaster happened, terrifying. The film predicted that on October 19 this year, the Earth would be destroyed. Unlike in the day after tomorrow, in Knowing, the sun would swallow the earth, so no one could flee. Then the film can play to its strengths of being imaginative, doing whatever is wanted, and the day dreams that cannot be realized are now able to realistically show to the audience, and everyone feels like the real thing; it really feels better doesn’t it? Without taking any responsibility, a dream comes true. Sometimes dreaming has the same purpose, but the dream is done passively, while the film is actively making, and to create the box office value doubles the benefits.

The dream in the film was that, Everyone else was doomed, but a boy and a girl were rescued by aliens to another planet to begin another round of Adam and Eve. The planet looked like paradise. Perhaps this was the origin of human beings? Only Adam and Eve were allowed to start a new life? Life is hard since beginning.

Why was it like science fiction? It played a game of numbers. In a primary school 50 years ago, the teacher asked students to paint a picture and put in a Time Capsule in order to give the future students 50 years later. Instead of painting, a girl filled numbers in the entire page. 50 years later, Nicholas Cage’s son received this piece of paper. Nicholas was looking at these figures, suddenly noticing 0911, aware of the rules of these figures, the disaster of 50 years, the date and the number of deaths. Of course, disasters occurred on time, and inevitably. He saw the tricks of the figures in the other unknown number, and they were longitude and latitude, indicating the location.

Then there was his ultimate concern, and the final prediction would be October 19, reversed two of number three; it was not 3, but E. What did E mean? Adam and Eve? When the little girl drew a picture, pointing to the painting of the sun, Nicholas suddenly thought of the sun, end of the world. Then no one could flee, but why was it EE? This time aliens stole the children. When Nicholas caught up with them, and realized the true meaning. Except for EE Everyone Else could not escape, then the aliens were to rescue the children – the human. When the aliens indicated that only the kids could go, Nicholas resolutely goodbyed his son, since his son carried the hope of all humanity.

It would be marvelous if the first disaster film was like this.

Cherish every day, nothing else.
